Zyflamend represents a scientific break-through in herbal COX-2 inhibition and inflammation reduction. Selection of the ten herbs for Zyflamend was based on their traditional use for inflammation as well as rigorous scientific inquiries into the herbal phamacopeia and international medical databases. This unique formula provides practitioners a safe and effective herbal alternative for regulation of inflammatory pathways.
Zyflamend has been studied at Columbia University's Department of Urology. The preliminary in vitro findings reported that Zyflamend significantly reduced COX-2 activity and modulated cell growth. Columbia University also plans a human clinical trial using Zyflamend and other NewMark dietary supplements to measure a number of biomarkers and prostate cell growth.
NewMark employs the innovation of supercritical carbon dioxide technology to gently extract the herbs in Zyflamend without the use of harsh chemical solvents. These solvents can damage the herb's delicate phytochemicals, leave chemical residue behind, and treaten the environment. Condensed carbon dioxide gas, warmed to its superfluid or "supercritical" state, deeply penetrates plant material, dissolving and extracting herbal constituents. This advanced extraction method delivers the full spectrum of active constituents and synergistic interactions that occur in the whole herb in a pure, highly concentrated form.
Holy basil
Holy Basil contains a number of phytonutrients shown to significantly block both the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways of arachidonic acid metabolism. One of Holy Basil's key phytonutrients appears to be ursolic acid, shown significantly reduce inflammation and support liver detoxification by enhancing production of the key detoxification enzyme, glutathione S-transferase. Furthermore, Holy Basil has demonstrated the ability to block stress-induced changes in cortisol levels.
Turmeric
Tumeric is a traditional Indian spice and medicine that has confirmed antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Although curcumin, a single active constituent, is often isolated for therapeutic purposes, research has demonstrated that the whole plant extract of tumeric containing the full spectrum of curcuminoids imparts the greatest activity. Tumeric has been found to work synergistically with green tea, significantly enhancing the anti-inflammatory and cell-protective effects of green tea polyphenols.
Ginger
The naturally occurring pungent constituents found in ginger display strong inhibitory effect on both lipoxygenase and COX-2 enzyme activity, supporting its long traditional use as a medicine used to modulated inflammation. Ginger is a synergizing herb that increases the absorption and utilization of other herbs and nutrients by as much as 2-2.5 times.
Green tea
Green tea contains at least 51 known anti-inflammatory phytonutrients, including a rich supply of polyphenols and catechins. The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reports green tea polyphenols markedly reduce COX-2 and may play an important role in supporting normal joint function.
Rosemary
Several constituents in rosemary including ursolic acid, betulinic acid, rosmarinic acid, carnosol, and oleanolic acid have received attention for their COX-2 inhibiting activity and ability to support detoxification through down-regulation of phase I cytochrome P450 enzymes and up-regulation of phase II glutathione S- transferase activity. Research has shown that the whole herb extract of rosemary is more effective that the isolated constituents in (chemoprevention) supporting normal cell growth and regulating inflammatory pathways at the cellular level. Zyflamend contains a dual extraction of rosemary providing a full spectrum of its active constituents.
HuZhang
Hu Zhang is the richest known source of resveratrol, the polyphenol associated with the positive health benefits of red wine. Resveratrol has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Research has indicated these effects are, in part, due to resveratrol's COX-2 inhibiting activity.
Chinese goldthread and barberry
Berberine-containing herbs have traditionally been used to support the regulation of inflammatory responses in the body. Recently, it was discovered that berberine possesses COX-2 inhibiting activity, which may explain its observed anti-inflammatory and cell protective effects. Full-spectrum extracts of Chinese goldthread and barberry were selected for Zyflamend because of their known high berberine content.
Oregano
According to the USDA database, oregano contains 31 anti-inflammatory compounds including the proven COX-2 inhibitors apigenin, kaempherol, oleanic acid and ursolic acid. Like rosemary, oregano, is also rich in romarinic acid, a constituent which has demonstrated the capacity to support normal platelet function. This effect has significant therapeutic potential for cell protection and for promoting normal cardiovascular function.
Scutellaria
The flavonoids of scutellaria: baicalin, baicalein, and wogonin, show impressive anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects. Researchers discovered the mechanisms involved in these observed activities include inhibition of COX-2, lipoxygenase, and nitric oxide, as well as induction of the important phase II detoxification enzyme quinine reductase. Most notable for its COX-2 inhibiting activity is baicalein, however, synergistic interactions that naturally occour amongst the plant constituents present in the whole herb impart more powerful anti-inflammatory effects that baicalein alone.
