An osteopath (D.O., doctor of osteopathy), like an allopath (M.D.), is licensed to practice the entire scope of medicine and surgery in all 50 states. They go through four years of medical school and then pursue a medical or surgical residency-training program in their field of interest. Osteopathic medicine is a complete system of medical care. The philosophy is to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms. It emphasizes the interrelationships of structure and function, and the appreciation of the body's ability to heal itself. In addition to the standard medical coursework (allopathic or MD equivalent), osteopathic medical students take approximately 200 hours of training in the art of osteopathic manipulative medicine.
